Due tipi da tenere d’occhio…
Nel press kit che abbiamo ricevuto dall’ufficio stampa di Greenville troviamo anche un’interessante scheda con gli ateli principali. Il titolo recita: “Riders to watch“.
In questo elenco troviamo anche due italiani. Si tratta di Fabrizio Macchi e Alex Zanardi. A proposito di Fabrizio si legge: “Fabrizio Macchi is a veteran para-cyclist who has competed on both the track and the road for many years after he lost a leg to cancer as a teenager. Macchi is a former World Champion. The event in Greenville is his return to international competition”.
Invece a proposito del campione olimpico: “In 2001, Alex Zanardi’s horrific crash in a Formula 1 race was seen around the world. After the accident – which left Zanardi as a double amputee – Zanardi rebuilt his career as a great athlete, this time as a handcyclist. The charismatic Italian focused his efforts on the 2012 London Paralympic Games, and came away with two gold medals (Individual Time Trial and Road Race), and a silver in the handcycle relay. Although Zanardi is the heavy favorite, keep your eye on American Dane Pilon, who – although he didn’t make the London team – narrowly missed a medal at the 2011 World Championships. Pilon is also a 3-time winner of the U.S. Handcycling Criterium Championships in Greenville”.

In realtà nel Team Relay abbiamo vinto la medaglia d’argento, non il bronzo…
Grazie Vittorio. Abbiamo corretto la segnalazione che riportava l’ufficio stampa della gara. Ci scusiamo per la svista.
